The History Podcast We Fell in Love With

Significant Others Podcast Thumbnail

What is it about?

The podcast focuses on the life and role of the significant others of the individuals who are considered to be the most influential over the course of history.

What do I love about it?

  • Each episode is solely focused on the relationship rather than the individuals. When we talk about big personalities like Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, and Maya Angelou; it is so easy to deviate from the topic of their relationship to their personal attributes and contributions to society. But the podcast makes sure that the spotlight remains on their significant others.
  • The storytelling. It takes you through the life of each of these great individuals with a focus on their partners and how they contribute to the story. I’m so invested in them by the end of it that I want to read more. The last episode was about Maya Angelou and I can’t wait to read her autobiography ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings‘.
  • The duration of each episode is around fifty minutes.

What do I learn?

The relationships discussed in the podcast have different flaws, but the common thing is respect and undying belief in their partner’s greatness. In today’s world, these relationships might be labeled as toxic but it was the norm in the times they lived in. Now that I think about it, infidelity was a common theme in the episodes as well. In some cases like Lincoln’s, I questioned if he was great in spite of the personal issues or because of them. It might be both.

In any case, the one thing you realize is that the right life partner might help you achieve greatness, but the wrong partner will help you achieve clinical depression.
